It ain't over yet!

The glitz and glam and celebrity guests of the Erics may be over, but Comics Weekend is still rockin' on!

The doors are open today from 10am to 5pm. The NZCC stall is still selling NZ comics including many of last night's award winning comics.

There are two talks scheduled for this afternoon starting at 2pm. First up is Travis Lealand-Maplesden on the translation of bande dessinée, followed by Dick Whyte on conceptual comics and a discussion with Draw, creator of the Eric award winning Web comic Drawing Silence http://www.drawingsilence.com/.

WHAT'S ON AT COMICS WEEKEND...

THE NEW ZEALAND INDEPENDENT COMICS FESTIVAL will run from the evening of Friday 2nd April to the evening of Sunday April 4th, at The Basement Gallery, 39 Dixon Street, Wellington.

It'll open on Friday night, at 5:30, and will be open from 10am on both weekend days. There'll be sales, there'll be chats. There'll be an exhibition... in fact, there'll be two!!!

The events we've scheduled so far are as follows:

2nd April, 5:30pm: Opening Night
Drinks, nibbles, opening talk, relaxed hijinks.

Which really is an opening FOR...
Two Exhibitions curated by Dr. Tim Bollinger, running 2nd -4th April.
Two exhibitions, NZ Comix in 70’s and The Work of H.W. Bennett, will be launched on Friday night and on display throughout the weekend. Dr. Tim Bollinger is a Comics Historian of some repute who has previously curated several comics focused exhibitions. He is a regular contributor to White Fungus magazine

3rd April, 5:30pm: Wellington Launch of Victoria University Press edition of Hicksville, by Dylan Horrocks
Hicksville is arguably New Zealand’s best know graphic novel, and the VUP edition is the first edition of the novel to be published in New Zealand. It has been translated into several languages, and its author, Dylan Horrocks, has been a guest of several comics and literary events, including the Les Belles Etrangères festival in Paris.

3rd April, 7:30pm: The Black River Digital New Zealand Comics Awards
A celebration of excellence in New Zealand’s independent publishing community, hosted by Fringe Festival comedian Nic Sando and also (we hope) featuring an interview with Burton Silver of Bogor fame.

Events confirmed but yet to be scheduled include: bande-dessinee with Travis Lealand-Mapelsden, Abstract comics with Dick Whyte, and engaging kids comics activities with G.C.R.

Comics Weekend is GO FOR LAUNCH in 2010

Hi, Comics Fans!

This years New Zealand Independent Comics Festival, Comics Weekend, will be taking place over Easter Weekend (2-4 April) in 2010 at The Basement gallery, on Dixon Street, Wellington. While we're still dreaming up some of the things that will be taking place, we are thrilled to announce that the 2010 Black River Digital New Zealand Comics Awards will be held on the evening of Saturday 3rd, and that sales will be taking place throughout the weekend. We have also confirmed two exhibitions of New Zealand Comics History curated by Dr. Tim Bollinger.

Not coincidentally, Wellington Comics Weekend is held over same weekend as the annual Armageddon Expo. We've organized it this way for a few reasons - so that artists who travel for Armageddon may put their bags down at Comics Weekend and not have to carry them around when they attend Armageddon, so that artists all have something fun to do in the evenings while they're in town, and also so that we at Comics Weekend can devote our energies to display and sale of the kinds of comics wares that aren't traditionally big sellers at Armageddon. Sales at Comics Weekend will be coordinated through the NZCC, the same group that manages distribution of New Zealand comics at Armageddon, so if you choose, you may sell your works at both events, wherever you decide to spend your time, with very little extra effort.

But these are all secondary concerns... the main reason we organise things the way we is the desire to turn Wellington, for one weekend of the year, in to a CITYWIDE COMICS EXPLOSION! Join us!

If you'd like to sell comics, help set up, or just know more about this year's happenings, including being NZCC sales at Armageddon Expo, please contact us at ericawards(at)gmail.com
